For this project, I have reimagined female ghosts to honour, celebrate, and preserve the rich traditions, knowledge, and taboos of Malaysian folklore. My focus on female characters stems from an interest in the gendered narratives present within these tales. The depiction of the female ghosts is intriguing and tells of the traditional expectations on gender and sexuality. There is a pattern of deviant behaviour and archetypes placed on the female characters. A representation of the sexist stereotypes and the attitude towards women in Malaysia.
By presenting these spirits, demons, and ghosts with a touch of humour and through the lens of mordern aesthetics, I aim to reframe these figures within a contemporary context. Through 3D modelling, I place them in imagined scenarios, showcasing them in everyday roles in the modern world. This approach allows me to preserve this history while making a feminist statement, reclaiming power and agency for these female figures.
In 2024, I revisited this project (pictured left) to showcase the growth in my 3D skills. The original models, created in 2019, are shown below.
